The key to mastering any art starts with getting a strong grip on the basics. Music is a vast art form and playing a musical instrument requires the right basics to move ahead.

Warm-ups including guitar finger exercises can make a whole world of difference when it comes to guitar practice and the practice approach undoubtedly decides how a learner learns their lessons. One of the challenges after getting acquainted with the basics would be to increase speed. Regular practice – as often as daily – of guitar finger exercises, ideally at every practice session, can help one to learn the guitar better and also faster.

4 Guitar Finger Exercises To Practice Daily So You Can Get Better Faster

Since you are here reading this blog, you are already acquainted with parts of the guitar. These exercises are explained using fret numbers and string numbers/names. The frets are numbered in ascending order from the one closest to the tuning head toward the hollow of the guitar. The strings are EADGBE (from lower E or the thickest string to the higher E or the thinnest string) or 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings in the same order. The fingers would be referred to as T (thumb), 1st (index), 2nd (middle), 3rd (ring), and 4th (pinkie).

1.

This is one of the most commonly taught guitar finger exercises to students across the world. While it is simple, it could be hard for beginners until they are used to it, and to get used to it, it must be practiced daily with commitment. The exercise helps the player learn to play the guitar without moving fingers away from the fretboard much.

Start by placing your 1st finger on the first fret on lower E and pluck the string upwards. Next, place your 2nd finger on the second fret on lower E and pluck the string downwards. Repeat the same pattern for the 3rd and the 4th frets on the same string. Play the four notes without a pause at regular intervals.

Now, repeat the same on the next string, the A string, and continue the same pattern until the higher E string is covered. This exercise can be repeated for all frets of all strings in any order, but typically the order from the left to the right is followed.

2.

This exercise involves using alternate fingers and is among the guitar finger exercises that help you get better control over the fretboard.

Start by placing the 1st finger on the first fret of lower E and pluck upwards. Then, place your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the same string and pluck upwards. Now, place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the same string and pluck upwards followed by placing your pinkie finger on the 4th fret and plucking upwards. This set of four notes can be played similarly on all the remaining strings and fret positions across the fretboard.

3.

For this exercise, you can combine the first two exercises on alternate strings and repeat for all frets. Guitar finger exercises can be slowly increased in speed as the player gets more familiar with finger positions and playing patterns.

4.

Playing scales is not only helpful as a guitar finger exercise but is also perfect for beginners as it helps them familiarize themselves with one of the most important basics, one that includes different notes. Major and minor scales are the bases on which musical pieces are formed. The C major scale is the first scale that most beginners learn.
